One Week Down… and Colorado Has Already Stolen Our Hearts!

We made it to FOCO (Fort Collins) one week after leaving Washington! There were a couple of days when we honestly wondered if we’d have to turn around because of the wildfire smoke. But as we reached Sheridan, Wyoming, the skies cleared, the mountains came into view, and—oh, what a wonderful feeling—we could finally breathe again.

Our home for the week has been the Fort Collins KOA, and what a fantastic campground! Pickleball, a swimming pool, putt-putt golf, two lakes, and more—it has been a wonderful place to settle in for a few days.

The best part, though, was spending the weekend with our granddaughter, Kate. She recently moved to Denver for her new job and came down to spend the weekend with us. We packed a lot into a few days: great BBQ, long walks through charming Old Town Fort Collins, the Saturday Market, games around the table, and a tour of her alma mater, Colorado State University. What a beautiful campus!

While we were there, we discovered that Temple Grandin is still a professor at CSU. Kate had never heard of her, so naturally we ended the day watching the movie Temple Grandin. If you haven’t seen it, we highly recommend it. It’s an inspiring story of perseverance and seeing the world through a different lens.

This weekend also happened to be the Palisade Peach Festival, so, of course, we had to indulge in a slice of famous Palisade Peach Pie. We couldn’t stop laughing as we remembered the classic Seinfeld episode where Kramer can’t stop talking about Palisade peaches. Sometimes television really does imitate life!

And because every great road trip deserves more than one pie… Jim also discovered an amazing Blueberry Rhubarb Pie, which may have given the peach pie some serious competition.

Tomorrow we’ll catch up on a few chores, and Jim is looking forward to visiting with a colleague. Then it’s off to Rocky Mountain National Park on Wednesday! We’re especially excited because our daughter Svetlana, who is also traveling, will meet us there for a short visit.

Ruby has also started her own campground reviews. Her current winner? Peter D’s RV Park in Sheridan, Wyoming. Her official reasons: lush green grass and a basket full of free tennis balls. She’s been an outstanding traveler and seems to think this RV life suits her just fine.

The adventure just keeps getting better, and we can’t wait to see what Rocky Mountain National Park has in store!
