We have had one of the most relaxing weeks of our trip so far!
We’ve been staying at Spruce Lake RV Park in Estes Park, just a couple of miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. One of the best discoveries was that after the timed-entry period ends each afternoon, it’s easy to head back into the park. We’ve taken full advantage of that, enjoying a picnic at beautiful Sprague Lake and spending several evenings searching for wildlife.
Ironically, the best wildlife viewing hasn’t even been in the National Park—it’s been right in our own campground! The elk seem to know hunting season hasn’t started yet because they wander through the campground like they own the place. Since we’re camped right along a river, they visit often, giving us a front-row seat from our campsite.
Then there are the wild turkeys. They parade up and down the hills as if they’re putting on a show, while poor Ruby sits perched in the trailer window, completely convinced that one of them should be hers. So far, the turkeys are winning.
Just when we thought the campground elk couldn’t be topped, yesterday gave us another unforgettable moment. We were having lunch at a little café along the river when we looked up and found a young elk standing right beside our table. She gave us her best “I’m adorable… don’t you have a snack for me?” look and shamelessly begged for a treat.
No… I didn’t feed her!
I know that probably surprises many of you, but I knew better—and besides, a park ranger was already on the way to gently shoo her along. She finally wandered down the Riverwalk until she caught up with her mama. It was one of those magical moments you simply can’t plan and one we’ll remember for a very long time.
We’ve also packed in plenty of fun around Estes Park. We rode the aerial tram to the top of Prospect Mountain for breathtaking views, strolled through an art walk, browsed the local farmers market, and even experienced a magic show deep underground at the historic Stanley Hotel. The weather has been a little unpredictable, with afternoon storms rolling through, but they clear out so quickly that they’ve hardly interrupted our plans.

Jim’s BBQ Report ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Jim declared Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ one of his all-time favorites. The parking lot was overflowing, so we figured it had to be good—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The ribs were everything Jim hoped they’d be, and I have to say the fried okra was outstanding. We both left happy… and very full!

Jim also discovered Rocky Mountain Cherry Pie this week. Let’s just say it earned a spot on our “worth coming back for” list!
We’ve absolutely fallen in love with Estes Park. The river winding through town, the beautiful Riverwalk, the charming shops, lovely parks, and free trolley system all give the town such a welcoming feel. Everywhere we turned there seemed to be live music, local art, and great food. It’s relaxed, clean, friendly, and simply a wonderful place to spend time.
Some places are fun to visit once.
Estes Park is one we’ll definitely come back to.
